What is MBTI®

MBTI INFPWhat is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator®  (MBTI®)?
The official MBTI® is a personality preference assessment offered only by CPP, Inc or CAPT who are the sole publishers of the instrument. To take the MBTI® , it must be offered by an MBTI® Certified Practitioner from one of these three authorized organizations: CPP, Inc, Center for Application and Type (CAPT) or American Management Association (AMA).

For a free consultation on the MBTI® and its benefits, call us at 201-503-5298.

The MBTI® or “the Indicator® ” offers self-awareness for:

  • Personal growth and development
  • Personal or professional relationships
  • Career exploration and search
  • Executive coaching
  • Team building
  • Leadership development

The framework of the MBTI® builds self and professional awareness using four pairs of preferences:

Do you prefer to focus on the outer world or on your own inner world? This preference for is called Extraversion or Introversion.

Extraversion (E) ↔ Introversion (I)

Do you prefer to focus on the basic information you take in or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? This preference is called Sensing or iNtuition.

Sensing (S) ↔ iNtuition (N)

When making decisions, do you prefer to first look at logic and consistency or first look at the people and special circumstances? This preference is called Thinking or Feeling.

Thinking (T) ↔ Feeling (F)

In dealing with the outside world, do you prefer getting things decided or do you prefer to stay open to new information and options? This preference is called Judgment or Perception.

Judgment (J) ↔ Perception (P)

The MBTI® assessment that we administer consists of 144 questions, which will take approximately 25-35 minutes to complete. Your answers will be analyzed to produce an official report. As MBTI® Certified Practitioners, we offer feedback packages that address understanding the framework and going through the report to understand your Type. There are tools to help you sustain applying your Type learning, to drive results for your choice of personal or professional development. You will receive your report after selecting and paying for a feedback package.

What does an official MBTI® report look like?

There are several types of reports and they can range from 2 to 17 pages long. The first thing to know about the MBTI is that there is a Step I and a Step II. Step I explains your preferences and states your Type (e.g., ENFP, INTJ, etc) but Step II explains one layer deeper about your preferences (i.e., there are facets within each preference). The best way for you to understand this is to see the sample reports. Click on these links to see samples for Step I: Profile Step I and Interpretive Step I Report.

The MBTI® Reports have a wealth of information. The guidance, insights and coaching you find here are not available in free imitation MBTI® assessments.

What’s the difference between the official MBTI® and the free MBTI-like, personality tests with instant online results?

Any personality test that is not labeled as MBTI®, is not the “real thing.” The difference between the MBTI® and the free tests online is that the MBTI® is reliable and validated through the tens of millions of official users since its inception. Reliability measures your consistency in how you answer your questions while validity measures your responses against the norm group of your type.

The MBTI® has the backing of the instrument and its research, while the others may not, or it may not be as comprehensive.

Why take the official assessment when I can get the test free online?

Beside the differences above, the reason to take the official MBTI® is because by investing your time and resources to understand your personality type, you should have an official report to refer back to, for use in personal and professional planning. It’s a great tool to leverage in important conversations for personal or professional discussions. Most importantly, knowing your Type is not enough to fully explore the benefits of the MBTI®. If you are truly committed to creating success in your life, then you deserve to have the real thing!

We offer a framework for you to understand the report and to help you apply the theory by using planning tools.
