T raining is the important transfer of knowledge to you and your team. In the past, training has been misconstrued as answers to solve all of your problems. But the truth is, that’s not how professional development works, at least not all the time and for everybody. Our challenge for leaders is to rethink what training is and what it can do. Training imparts knowledge, tools and processes to execute better – in your personal and professional lives. It works because you learn, then you apply it. So the key here is to have a plan – what is the long-term implementation strategy of using these new skills?
How does training complement your goals and integrate into your development plan – this is the question that is often overlooked. Don’t go to training for the sake of having someone tell you what to change, rather attend a training class to learn a new way of completing the same task or to build a skill. Ask yourself, how will this training class help me get closer to what I want to accomplish, and what is the big picture? With this refined mindset for training, you have a realistic approach to implementing change one step at a time.
